Overview

About chef coats

Commercial kitchens in the UAE are hot even with extraction and air-conditioning, so a chef coat has to balance protection from splashes and heat with breathability. The traditional double-breasted design gives two layers of fabric across the chest and can be reversed to hide stains during service. Single-breasted, snap-front and short-sleeve styles are lighter and suit fast-paced or casual kitchens.

100% cotton is the classic choice because it breathes and is less likely to melt than polyester if it touches a hot surface, but it creases and stains more readily. Poly-cotton is easier to care for, resists wrinkles and keeps colour through frequent washing. Many coats add mesh ventilation panels under the arms or across the back for comfort in hot kitchens.

Details signal rank and brand. Executive chefs often wear white with contrast piping or black knot (cloth) buttons, while line teams may wear black or coloured coats with studs that can be removed before washing. Embroidered hotel or restaurant logos and chef names are standard. Coordinate coats with aprons, trousers and caps so the kitchen looks consistent.

Fabrics

Fabric options

Common fabric options and where each works best. Compare fibres and weights in the fabric guide.

  • Cotton twill or drill

    100% cotton

    180–240 GSM

Best for: Executive and fine-dining chefs

Breathable and less likely to melt near heat; creases and needs pressing. May shrink without pre-shrinking.

  • Poly-cotton twill

    Typically 65% polyester / 35% cotton

    180–220 GSM

Best for: High-volume kitchens and commercial laundry

Easy care, colour-stable and wrinkle-resistant; slightly less breathable than cotton.

  • Cotton-rich blend

    Typically 65% cotton / 35% polyester

    180–220 GSM

Best for: Teams wanting cotton comfort with easier care

A compromise between breathability and durability.

  • Lightweight stretch with mesh panels

Poly-cotton or polyester with elastane; polyester mesh panels

    150–190 GSM

Best for: Hot kitchens and open-kitchen line teams

Cooler and more flexible; check that mesh areas are away from direct heat.

Customisation

Branding options

Each method suits different fabrics, logos and quantities. We confirm the method, size and position with a mock-up before production.

Common branding locations

  • Left chest
  • Right chest (name and title)
  • Sleeve
  • Collar
  • Back yoke

Availability of each method for your garment and quantity is confirmed on your quotation.

  • Logo embroidery

The standard method for chef coats: logos on the chest, names and titles above the pocket or on the sleeve. Withstands hot washing.

  • Custom labels

Woven labels and branded loops for hotel or restaurant group programmes.

  • Private label uniforms

For restaurant groups wanting their own designed coat with branded trims and labels, subject to quantity.

  • DTF printing

Rarely recommended on chef coats because transfers may not tolerate hot industrial washing or heat exposure.

Fabric care

Fabric and care information

Care that keeps colour, shape and branding looking right through repeated washing.

Woven twill, drill and shirting

  • Follow the label for wash temperature; workwear may allow higher temperatures
  • Fasten zips and buttons before washing
  • Iron while slightly damp for a crisp finish

Poly-cotton blends

  • Usually tolerate 40 °C washing and frequent laundering
  • Medium iron; blends crease less than pure cotton
  • Check the label before commercial or industrial laundering

Polyester and performance knits

  • Wash cool (around 30 °C) and line dry
  • Skip fabric softener, which can reduce moisture-wicking
  • Low iron only; high heat can mark synthetic fibres

Branded areas

  • Turn garments inside out to protect prints and embroidery
  • Never iron directly over printed or transfer areas
  • Avoid harsh stain removers on branding

General guidance only. Always follow the care label on the supplied garment.

Buying advice

Buying tips

  1. 01

Choose fabric by kitchen temperature and laundry

Cotton suits chefs who value breathability and have coats pressed. Poly-cotton suits high-volume kitchens and commercial laundries. Vented styles help in hot line kitchens.

  2. 02

Plan coats per chef per week

Chefs commonly change coats daily, so plan several coats per person to cover laundry cycles, plus spares for new starters.

  3. 03

    Use details to show rank

Piping, button colour or coat colour can distinguish executive, sous and commis chefs while keeping a consistent brand.

  4. 04

    Check button practicality

Knot buttons look traditional but must survive washing; removable studs need to be collected before laundry. Choose the closure that suits how coats are cleaned.

FAQ

Chef Coats: frequently asked questions

Why are chef coats double-breasted?

The double layer adds protection from splashes and heat, and the front can be re-buttoned the other way to hide stains during service.

Is cotton or poly-cotton better for chef coats?

Cotton is more breathable and less likely to melt near heat; poly-cotton is easier to care for and holds colour. Many kitchens choose a cotton-rich blend as a compromise.

Can chef names be embroidered on each coat?

Yes, names and titles are a common addition. Cost and timing for individual names are confirmed in your quotation.

Are chef coats flame-retardant?

Standard chef coats are not flame-retardant. If your operation requires certified protective clothing, it must be specified and supplied as a certified product.
