Overview

About custom aprons

The apron is often the most visible branded item in a cafe or restaurant, and one of the simplest ways to refresh a team's look without replacing the whole uniform. It protects clothing from spills and stains, carries tools and order pads, and puts a logo at eye level for customers.

Style follows the role. Bib aprons cover the chest and suit baristas, kitchen staff and bakers. Waist and bistro aprons suit waiting staff who need pockets for order pads and card machines. Cross-back aprons spread weight across the shoulders rather than the neck, which staff appreciate on long shifts. Specialist styles exist for salons, workshops and butchery.

Fabric determines both look and care. Poly-cotton twill is practical and easy to wash. Cotton canvas and denim give a premium, artisan look but can need more care and may fade. Waterproof or PVC-coated aprons suit dishwashing and food preparation. Leather and faux-leather straps add a premium finish but should be checked for washability.

Fabrics

Fabric options

Common fabric options and where each works best. Compare fibres and weights in the fabric guide.

  • Poly-cotton twill

    Typically 65% polyester / 35% cotton

    190–250 GSM

Best for: Restaurants and kitchens with frequent washing

Durable, colour-stable and easy to launder.

  • Cotton canvas

    100% cotton

    250–400 GSM

Best for: Cafes, bakeries and premium retail

Sturdy with a natural look; may shrink and fade, and heavier canvas is warm.

  • Denim or chambray

    100% cotton or cotton-elastane

    200–340 GSM

Best for: Barista, barber and lifestyle brands

Distinctive look; dark denim can transfer dye when new, so wash separately first.

  • Waterproof coated fabric

Polyester with PU or PVC coating

Best for: Dishwashing, fish and meat preparation

Wipe-clean and splash-resistant; less breathable and not suited to high-heat washing.

Fabric care

Fabric and care information

Care that keeps colour, shape and branding looking right through repeated washing.

Woven twill, drill and shirting

  • Follow the label for wash temperature; workwear may allow higher temperatures
  • Fasten zips and buttons before washing
  • Iron while slightly damp for a crisp finish

Cotton and cotton jersey

  • Wash at 30–40 °C, inside out, with similar colours
  • Avoid hot tumble drying to limit shrinkage
  • Avoid bleach on coloured garments

Branded areas

  • Turn garments inside out to protect prints and embroidery
  • Never iron directly over printed or transfer areas
  • Avoid harsh stain removers on branding

General guidance only. Always follow the care label on the supplied garment.

Buying advice

Buying tips

  1. 01

    Choose straps for comfort

Neck straps can cause strain on long shifts. Cross-back designs move weight to the shoulders and are often preferred by baristas and kitchen staff.

  2. 02

    Size pockets for real tools

Check that pockets fit your order pads, card terminals, phones or thermometers. A pocket that is too small will not be used.

  3. 03

    Think about washing before style

Leather straps, wooden toggles and heavy canvas look good but may not survive commercial laundry. Ask how each apron should be cleaned.

  4. 04

Match aprons to the rest of the uniform

Aprons are often worn over chef coats or polo shirts. Choose colours that work together and keep logos visible.
