Overview

About custom polo shirts

The polo shirt is one of the most widely used uniform tops because it sits between a T-shirt and a formal shirt: smart enough for customer-facing roles, comfortable enough for a full shift, and easy to brand with a neat embroidered logo. It suits reception and sales staff, retail floors, delivery and installation teams, event crews and company giveaways alike.

The decision that matters most is fabric. Cotton pique feels soft and looks traditional, but holds sweat and can fade with frequent hot washes. Poly-cotton blends keep their shape and colour better through industrial laundering. 100% polyester moisture-wicking knits dry quickly and are the practical choice for staff who spend time outdoors or move between air-conditioned interiors and summer heat. Our guide to polo shirt GSM explains how weight affects feel and durability.

For branding, embroidery is the usual choice for a left-chest logo because it lasts as long as the garment and looks professional. Larger back prints, event graphics and multi-colour artwork are often better suited to DTF or screen printing. Tell us how the shirts will be worn and washed, and we will recommend a fabric and branding combination to confirm in your quotation.

Fabrics

Fabric options

Common fabric options and where each works best. Compare fibres and weights in the fabric guide.

  • Cotton pique

    100% cotton (combed or carded)

    180–240 GSM

Best for: Office, retail and indoor customer-facing roles

Soft and breathable but slow to dry. Heavier weights hold shape better; expect some fading with frequent hot washes.

  • Poly-cotton pique

    Typically 65% polyester / 35% cotton or 60/40

    180–220 GSM

Best for: Uniform programmes with frequent or commercial laundering

Better colour retention and less shrinkage than pure cotton, with a cotton-like handle.

  • Moisture-wicking polyester

100% polyester (birdseye, mesh or micro-pique knit)

    140–180 GSM

Best for: Outdoor, field, sports and event staff in UAE summer heat

Dries quickly and resists fading. Suits sublimation on white or light bases. Can retain odour without an appropriate finish.

  • Cotton-feel performance blend

Polyester-rich blend with cotton or modal content, sometimes with elastane

    160–200 GSM

Best for: Mixed indoor and outdoor roles needing a softer handle

Balances comfort and quick drying; availability varies by colour and should be confirmed at quotation.

Customisation

Branding options

Each method suits different fabrics, logos and quantities. We confirm the method, size and position with a mock-up before production.

Common branding locations

  • Left chest
  • Right chest
  • Right or left sleeve
  • Back yoke (below collar)
  • Full back
  • Collar or placket detail

Availability of each method for your garment and quantity is confirmed on your quotation.

  • Logo embroidery

Well suited to left-chest and sleeve logos on pique and blends. Keep fine text above about 5 mm in height for legibility.

  • DTF printing

Good for multi-colour or photographic logos and back prints on cotton, poly-cotton and polyester.

  • Screen printing

Cost-effective for larger runs of simple one- to three-colour designs. Less suited to textured pique for fine detail.

  • Sublimation printing

Only for white or light-coloured polyester polos. Not suitable for cotton or dark garments.

  • Custom neck labels

Woven or printed labels can replace or supplement the existing label for branded programmes.

Fabric care

Fabric and care information

Care that keeps colour, shape and branding looking right through repeated washing.

Cotton pique

  • Wash at 30–40 °C, inside out, to protect the knit surface
  • Reshape the collar while damp and line dry
  • Warm iron on the reverse; avoid ironing over embroidery

Polyester and performance knits

  • Wash cool (around 30 °C) and line dry
  • Skip fabric softener, which can reduce moisture-wicking
  • Low iron only; high heat can mark synthetic fibres

Branded areas

  • Turn garments inside out to protect prints and embroidery
  • Never iron directly over printed or transfer areas
  • Avoid harsh stain removers on branding

General guidance only. Always follow the care label on the supplied garment.

Buying advice

Buying tips

  1. 01

Match the fabric to the working environment

Indoor staff in air-conditioned offices are usually comfortable in cotton pique. Staff who work outside, drive between sites or work in kitchens and warehouses tend to do better in moisture-wicking polyester or a poly-cotton blend.

  2. 02

Order a size set before the main run

Sizing differs between garment ranges. Collect sizes from staff using a sample set or the size guide and plan a small buffer for new joiners. Our size planning guide covers how to split quantities.

  3. 03

Choose branding for the fabric, not just the logo

Dense embroidery can pucker lightweight polyester, and sublimation does not work on cotton. Compare methods in logo embroidery vs DTF printing before deciding.

  4. 04

    Plan for reorders

Record the exact fabric, colour reference, logo size and position from your first order so replacements match. Colour can vary between dye lots, so ask how reorders are matched.

  5. 05

Compare quotes on the same specification

A lower price often reflects a lighter fabric or smaller logo. Ask each supplier to quote the same GSM, composition and stitch count. See what affects polo shirt cost.

FAQ

Custom Polo Shirts: frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for custom polo shirts?

Minimum quantities depend on the garment range, colour and branding method, so they are confirmed in your quotation. Share your expected quantity and we will tell you which options fit.

Which polo shirt fabric is most comfortable in UAE summer?

For outdoor or active roles, a moisture-wicking polyester or polyester-rich blend usually stays more comfortable because it dries quickly. For air-conditioned indoor work, cotton pique around 180–200 GSM is a common choice. See fabrics for UAE weather.

Should I choose embroidery or printing for my logo?

Embroidery is durable and suits small chest logos. Printing (DTF or screen) suits large designs, gradients and back prints. The right choice depends on artwork, fabric and quantity; we will recommend one when quoting.

Can we mix sizes and men's and women's fits in one order?

Yes, mixed size runs are normal for uniform orders. Women's fits are available in many ranges; availability for your chosen fabric and colour is confirmed at quotation.

How long does a polo shirt order take?

Lead time depends on garment availability, quantity, branding method and artwork approval, and is confirmed in your quotation. Allow time for a pre-production proof.
