Overview

About medical scrubs

Scrubs need to be comfortable through long shifts, simple to launder at high temperatures, and easy to identify by role. Many UAE hospitals and clinic groups use colour coding to distinguish doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff, so planning colours across the whole team is the first step.

Fabric choice comes down to care and comfort. Poly-cotton is the traditional choice and tolerates frequent hot washing. Polyester-viscose-elastane stretch fabrics feel softer, move with the wearer and resist wrinkles, which is why they are popular in private clinics. 100% cotton is breathable but creases and fades more quickly.

Some fabrics are sold with antimicrobial, fluid-repellent or stain-release finishes. These finishes vary in how they are tested and how long they last through washing. If your infection-control policy requires them, ask for the fabric's test documentation and the standard it was tested against before relying on the claim. Scrubs are not a substitute for certified PPE such as surgical gowns.

Fabrics

Fabric options

Common fabric options and where each works best. Compare fibres and weights in the fabric guide.

  • Poly-cotton twill or poplin

    Typically 65% polyester / 35% cotton

    140–190 GSM

Best for: Hospitals and high-volume laundering

Durable and colour-stable through repeated hot washes.

  • Four-way stretch

    Polyester-viscose (rayon) with 3–5% elastane

    160–200 GSM

Best for: Private clinics and staff wanting a modern fit

Soft, wrinkle-resistant and comfortable on long shifts. Check the maximum wash temperature, as elastane is heat-sensitive.

  • 100% cotton

    100% cotton

    150–190 GSM

Best for: Staff who prefer natural fibres

Breathable but creases and fades faster; may shrink without pre-shrinking.

  • Polyester with performance finish

100% polyester or polyester-elastane with applied finish

    140–180 GSM

Best for: Roles where fluid repellency or quick drying is required

Finish performance should be confirmed by test documentation for the specific fabric.

Fabric care

Fabric and care information

Care that keeps colour, shape and branding looking right through repeated washing.

Woven twill, drill and shirting

  • Follow the label for wash temperature; workwear may allow higher temperatures
  • Fasten zips and buttons before washing
  • Iron while slightly damp for a crisp finish

Cotton and cotton jersey

  • Wash at 30–40 °C, inside out, with similar colours
  • Avoid hot tumble drying to limit shrinkage
  • Avoid bleach on coloured garments

Polyester and performance knits

  • Wash cool (around 30 °C) and line dry
  • Skip fabric softener, which can reduce moisture-wicking
  • Low iron only; high heat can mark synthetic fibres

Branded areas

  • Turn garments inside out to protect prints and embroidery
  • Never iron directly over printed or transfer areas
  • Avoid harsh stain removers on branding

General guidance only. Always follow the care label on the supplied garment.

Buying advice

Buying tips

  1. 01

Set a colour code before ordering

Agree colours by role across all departments and sites first. Changing colours later means replacing whole sets.

  2. 02

Match fabric to your laundry process

If scrubs are washed by a commercial laundry at high temperatures, confirm the fabric's maximum wash temperature. Stretch fabrics may need lower temperatures than poly-cotton.

  3. 03

Ask for evidence behind finish claims

For antimicrobial or fluid-repellent finishes, request the test report and the number of washes it was tested to. Treat untested claims with caution.

  4. 04

    Offer a fit session

Scrub sizing varies between brands and between unisex and fitted cuts. A sample set lets staff choose before the main order; see the size guide.

FAQ

Medical Scrubs: frequently asked questions

Are your scrubs antimicrobial?

Antimicrobial finishes are available on some fabrics, but performance varies. If you need one, we will ask for the fabric's test documentation so you can check it against your infection-control policy.

Can scrubs be embroidered with staff names?

Yes, names and roles are commonly embroidered on the chest. Cost and timing for individual personalisation are confirmed in your quotation.

Which scrub fabric is most comfortable for long shifts?

Many staff prefer polyester-viscose-elastane stretch fabrics for softness and movement. Poly-cotton is more tolerant of very hot laundering.

Do you supply surgical gowns or PPE?

Scrubs are uniform garments, not certified PPE. Surgical gowns and protective medical clothing require certified products and are outside the scope of this page.
