Overview

About high-visibility workwear

Hi-vis clothing makes workers visible to drivers and plant operators in daylight, low light and at night. In daylight, fluorescent background fabric (usually yellow or orange) does the work; in darkness, retro-reflective tape reflects headlights back to the driver. Both matter, and a garment is only as effective as its condition: faded, dirty or damaged hi-vis performs worse.

Many sites and clients specify a standard such as EN ISO 20471, which defines garment classes (1, 2 and 3) by the minimum areas of fluorescent and reflective material. Class 3 provides the most coverage and is typically required near high-speed traffic; Class 1 offers the least. Other markets reference ANSI/ISEA 107. A vest is only compliant if that specific product has been tested and certified, so request the certificate for the exact garment and check it lists the class your site requires. We do not describe a product as compliant without that documentation.

Branding needs care. Logos placed over reflective tape or covering too much fluorescent area can reduce visibility and may affect certification. Keep branding to designated areas, usually the back panel or chest, and confirm with the garment documentation. In UAE heat, mesh vests and moisture-wicking hi-vis polos are far more comfortable than solid-fabric garments.

Fabrics

Fabric options

Common fabric options and where each works best. Compare fibres and weights in the fabric guide.

  • Fluorescent polyester knit

    100% polyester

    120–160 GSM

Best for: Vests and lightweight hi-vis outer layers

Holds fluorescent colour well; repeated washing and UV exposure gradually fade colour.

  • Fluorescent polyester mesh

    100% polyester mesh

    100–130 GSM

Best for: Outdoor workers in UAE summer heat

Better airflow than solid fabric. Check that the specific mesh garment is certified to the class you need.

  • Moisture-wicking hi-vis knit

    100% polyester birdseye or pique

    140–180 GSM

Best for: Hi-vis polo shirts and T-shirts worn as a base layer

Replaces a shirt and vest combination in heat; certification depends on the specific garment.

  • Poly-cotton hi-vis

    Polyester-cotton blend with fluorescent face

    200–280 GSM

Best for: Hi-vis coveralls and trousers

More comfortable against skin than pure polyester; fluorescent performance should be confirmed by certificate.

Customisation

Branding options

Each method suits different fabrics, logos and quantities. We confirm the method, size and position with a mock-up before production.

Common branding locations

  • Back panel (between or above tape)
  • Left chest
  • Right chest
  • ID badge holder

Availability of each method for your garment and quantity is confirmed on your quotation.

  • Screen printing

Common for company names on vest backs. Keep print clear of reflective tape and within areas permitted by the garment certification.

  • DTF printing

Suitable for full-colour logos on polyester hi-vis; keep within designated branding areas.

  • Logo embroidery

Possible on chest areas of heavier hi-vis garments; not usually used on lightweight mesh vests.

Fabric care

Fabric and care information

Care that keeps colour, shape and branding looking right through repeated washing.

Cotton and cotton jersey

  • Wash at 30–40 °C, inside out, with similar colours
  • Avoid hot tumble drying to limit shrinkage
  • Avoid bleach on coloured garments

Polyester and performance knits

  • Wash cool (around 30 °C) and line dry
  • Skip fabric softener, which can reduce moisture-wicking
  • Low iron only; high heat can mark synthetic fibres

Cotton pique

  • Wash at 30–40 °C, inside out, to protect the knit surface
  • Reshape the collar while damp and line dry
  • Warm iron on the reverse; avoid ironing over embroidery

Poly-cotton blends

  • Usually tolerate 40 °C washing and frequent laundering
  • Medium iron; blends crease less than pure cotton
  • Check the label before commercial or industrial laundering

Branded areas

  • Turn garments inside out to protect prints and embroidery
  • Never iron directly over printed or transfer areas
  • Avoid harsh stain removers on branding

General guidance only. Always follow the care label on the supplied garment.

Buying advice

Buying tips

  1. 01

Confirm the class your site needs

Ask your HSE team or main contractor which standard and class applies. Class 3 is usually required near fast traffic; lower classes may be acceptable elsewhere.

  2. 02

Request the certificate for the exact garment

Certificates are issued for specific products and sizes. A certificate for one vest does not cover a different style or a modified garment.

  3. 03

Do not cover reflective tape with branding

Logos over tape or fluorescent areas reduce visibility. Ask where branding can be placed without affecting the garment's class.

  4. 04

    Replace faded or damaged hi-vis

UAE sun fades fluorescent fabric. Set a replacement schedule and check garments regularly, following the care label limits on wash cycles.

FAQ

High-Visibility Workwear: frequently asked questions

Are your hi-vis vests EN ISO 20471 certified?

Certification belongs to specific garments. When you request a quote, tell us the standard and class you need and ask for the certificate for the exact product before ordering.

Can we print our logo on certified hi-vis vests?

Usually yes, within designated areas that do not cover reflective tape or reduce fluorescent area below the class minimum. Confirm placement against the garment documentation.

Yellow or orange hi-vis: which should we choose?

Both are used. Many sites assign colours by role or contractor, and orange can stand out better against some backgrounds. Follow your site's specification.

Are mesh vests suitable for UAE summer?

Mesh vests allow more airflow and are more comfortable in heat. Check that the specific mesh garment meets the class your site requires.

How often should hi-vis workwear be replaced?

When it is faded, dirty, damaged or past the wash cycles stated on the label. Outdoor use in strong sun may shorten its useful life.
